MTV opts for new iTV technology by Nionex GmbH

MHP platform “pontegra” convinces international music broadcaster

Guetersloh/Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, 22 March 2005 – The world’s best known music broadcaster MTV has launched interactive television based on the MHP platform ‚pontegra’ by Nionex. This extends the broadcaster’s services beyond TV programming and breaks new ground in the field of innovative technology.

In conjunction with T-online, MTV introduced its new iTV service based on the MHP browser pontegra by Nionex GmbH at the Cebit trade fair 2005. The novelty of this service is that the digital satellite signal (DVB-S) is linked to contents and to iTV applications that are transmitted by DSL. In
this way TV programs and commercials offering products and services and opportunities for transactions such as e-Shopping can be synchronized and transmitted through broadband Internet technology.

This reduces the costs for interactive TV services enormously: For one thing, instead of hundreds of kilobytes for iTV applications and iTV content, only a minimal starting application of about 2 KB has to be transmitted by satellite. Everything else is loaded by means of DSL over the feedback
channel. For another, Web tools, Web-authoring systems and HTML skills are all that are needed to develop iTV services.

The HTML based MHP platform pontegra by Nionex makes it all possible. In particular, the newly developed pontegra bridge makes it possible for the first time to load not only pontegra itself but also further iTV applications or plug-ins over feedback channels to an MHP compatible Set Top
Box. “For years we have been instrumental in converging iTV and Internet technology. The development of new cutting edge technology is a further essential step in this direction and has convinced MTV to choose pontegra for their interactive television plans,” says Udo Gottschalk,
project manager for iTV at Nionex.
