Bertelsmann AG Re-launches Intranet with NIONEX and Tridion

BeNet is now based on the Tridion R5 content management system and the NIONEX enterprise information portal

Gütersloh/Munich, 2 June 2003 – Quadrilingual, up-to-date, globally accessible and available to around 80,000 employees: the demands placed on Bertelsmann AG’s intranet re-launch were challenging, complex and multifaceted. Since the 31st of March, all employees of the media corporation in 55 different countries have been able to use the new BeNet around the clock from any location. Daily updated news and reports from the company in German, English, French and Spanish are made available online at the intranet platform. Employees also have access to other corporate information and data, as well as services such as an internal job vacancy bulletin board. The intranet solution was conceived and implemented within three months by NIONEX, a full subsidiary of DirectGroup Bertelsmann. The new site’s concept and design was done by the same creative team that developed the German knowledge site, wissen.de. The emphasis here was placed on concise structures, user-friendly navigation and simple search functions.

For this complex task, the system integrator NIONEX combined its own enterprise information portal (EIP) with Tridion R5. Tridion is Europe’s leading vendor of software solutions for XML-based enterprise content management. With its flagship product Tridion R5, the company provided the technical fundament for the new BeNet.

This solution makes it possible to merge contents and services from various sources within the Bertelsmann corporation, and to utilise, administer and publish these via different channels.
Because Bertelsmann is a decentrally-organised company with multi-layered technical solutions even in its IT division, another challenge lied in determining which users actually access the Bertelsmann corporate network. For employees outside the company network, the most fully automatic registration procedure possible was developed.

Whereas not every subsidiary of the Bertelsmann AG could access the intranet in the past, the new BeNet is now available to all company employees worldwide for the first time. With their user name and password, field staff and employees at home can log onto the system. A comprehensive customisation concept makes it possible to present employees and managers with targeted, personalised information.

Apart from the user administration of 80,000 employees, the technical solution from NIONEX and Tridion also encompasses an editor concept for internal departments with which they can design their own BeNet pages, as well as a server architecture that can withstand the traffic strain of a global enterprise.

Markus Langer, Online Media Director in the Dept. for Corporate Communication at Bertelsmann AG says, “The re-launch of our intranet was a complex task that required sophisticated technical and organisational solutions. With the new BeNet, NIONEX has accomplished outstanding work.”
