Nionex GmbH has developed the world´s first browser based on the MHP standard

Pontegra browser makes set up of interactive TV services affordable

Guetersloh/Munich/Dortmund, 17 July 2002 - The specialist for content management systems and portal solutions, Nionex, a sub-division of the Wissen Media Group in arvato Bertelsmann AG, has developed the world´s first browser in the basis if the new MHP (Multimedia Home Platform) standard. Nionex´s Pontegra browser paves the way for the quick and economical development if interactive TV services and forms the basis for future oriented solustions.

The standard for interactive televosion services is calles MHP. With the introduction of DVB-HTML into the MHP 1.1 standard, web-based contents can be used for interactive TV. Since there is currently no standadized Set Top Box compatible DVB-HTML browser in the market, and DVB-HTML support in MHP is optional, Nionex´s new development has filled this marketniche. The product Pontegra by Nionex is the first HTML browser based in MHP. It is the innovative integration solution for MHP and the current TV services and will pave the way for future trends. Pontegra makes it possible to generate new interactive services with standard authoring tools and web-based workflow components.

Pontegra can be load onto a Set Top Box as a standard MHP application and demonstrates, among other, the following characteristics:

  • support of a fully compatible DVB-HTML subset that is oriented to market demands
  • expandable by using an MHP and DVB-HTML compatible plug-in mechanism
  • low code volume
  • fast parsing and rendering algorithms
  • intelligent pre-fetching and coaching mechanisms

Horst Gosewehr, managing director of Nionex GmbH: "There is a clear advantage to the Pontegra browser: Pontegra is based on open standards. Instead of spending a lot of money on the development of his own formats and systems, the customer can invest in future-oriented DVB-HTML contents and services and be able to attain new TV services quickly andeconimically."

As a distinguished service for new mediansolutions, Nionex has concepts and the know-how to connect the Internet to iTV. The company has already developed interactive TC applications, among other places, for example, when working on the website of the largest knowledge portal in Europe, wissen.de. The technology service Nionex has also developes iTV solutionsfor broadcasters and network operators, interactive TV portals such as electronic program guides, online and offline games home banking, e-commerce applications, interacticve TV game shows and all types of push services.

Nionex introduced the Pontegra browser and its entire range of services at this year´s International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) held in Amsterdam on 13-17 September.
